The Instrumentation Technician provides technical expertise and guidance with respect to the maintenance, repair, rebuilding, and commissioning of all instrumentation equipment. Supervises and coordinates contract workers, in this discipline, that are working in the area.

 

What You'll Be Doing

  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance tasks as assigned in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensures that all preventative and corrective maintenance schedules are adhered to.
  • Coordinates contract workers on a daily basis, for construction or maintenance of area facilities.
  • Assists in the design and implementation of control systems for new and existing facilities.
  • Expedites the purchase and delivery of materials needed for various projects and maintenance.
  • Codes instrumentation invoices to track project and maintenance costs accordingly.
  • Schedules preventative maintenance for instrumentation and control equipment within Maximo.
  • Communicates with Operations personnel with respect to maintenance or changes to SCADA/PLC controls.
  • Troubleshoots, identifies, and corrects problems related to instrumentation and controls.
  • Is responsible for commissioning of new facilities and additions to existing controls.
  • Maintains documents related to the Instrumentation field, such as JHA’s, MWI’s, and Job Plans.
  • Reads, as-build, and maintains prints such as electrical, P&ID’s, shutdown keys, MOV Matrices Control Philosophies, etc.
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

 
What You'll Bring

  • Instrument technician certificate (preferably Interprovincial Red Seal) with a minimum of 5 years experience. 
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in an industrial setting, preferably oilfield related, performing facility construction and maintenance.
  • Any experience in the electrical trade would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience as an Instrumentation Tech.
  • Possession of the required safety certificates of the industry: H2S, WHMIS, First Aid, etc.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of business software, i.e. Excel, Microsoft Word, etc.
  • Exhibits an in depth understanding and ability to program/troubleshoot the Allen Bradley PLC’s.
  • Knowledge in SCADA and Distributed Control Systems is an asset.
  • The ability to trouble shoot Allen Bradley ControlLogix and SLC 500 PLC programming.
  • Strong communication protocol experience is required (RS-232/485 Modbus, Ethernet, HART and Radio etc.)
  • Keeps equipment and labor costs within 10% of the project budget.
  • Ability to effectively analyze data used in the troubleshooting of area equipment in order to maintain their operation within an acceptable margin of error.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, both in written and oral communications.
  • Ability to complete projects on time, while at the same time, accommodate existing Operations (minimum interruption to existing facility operations).
  • Possesses advanced knowledge of relevant technological improvements.
  • Maintains a scheduled plan for the preventative maintenance of Instrumentation equipment.
  • Demonstrates an appreciation of the service role of the Technical Services Group when dealing with Operations personnel.
  • Self-motivated team player able to work well under pressure.

 
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to be on-call for approximately one-week every three months. 
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces as well as climb ladders and stairs.
  • Standing for frequent periods and sitting occasionally, including driving.
  • Occasional bending and twisting is required as is prolonged neck positioning.
  • Lower extremity movements – kneeling, crouching and squatting.
  • Frequent upper extremity movements (elbows, forearm, wrist, handgrip), with some above shoulder work.
  • Lifting up to 50lbs.
  • Carrying up to 50lbs, pushing up to 30lbs.
