The Role
Reporting to the Operations Shift Supervisor, the Rail Car Loader is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient loading of all refined products into rail cars at the Moose Jaw Refinery. This role ensures rail cars are properly inspected, secured, placarded, documented, and prepared prior to loading and release to CP Rail.
This is a developmental role to start your career in Operations at Gibson, with opportunity for advancement upon completion of required training compentency programs.
What You'll Be Doing
Rail Car Inspection & Loading
- Inspect rail cars prior to loading to ensure all nuts, bolts, valves, caps, ladders, and fittings are secure and in proper position
- Verify belly valve positioning prior to loading
- Ensure wheel chocks are properly applied and rail cars are secured before commencing operations
- Confirm appropriate placards are installed identifying product being loaded
- Safely load correct products into designated rail cars following written procedures
- Close and secure safety gates and track areas during loading activities
- Complete required rail car inspections and checklists
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure all TDG documentation and shipping paperwork is accurately completed
- Report spills, incidents, hazards, and product quality issues to the Operations Supervisor
- Use safe work permits and gas testing equipment as required
- Maintain compliance with all Company HSS&E policies and procedures
- Participate in emergency response and provide on-call support as required
- Maintain effective shift handovers to ensure operational continuity
Equipment & Operations Support
- Monitor and maintain equipment related to rail loading operations
- Perform minor maintenance and day-to-day upkeep of the rail load-out facilities
- Ensure equipment is properly isolated when not in use
- Maintain high housekeeping standards in the work area
- Obtain product samples and support quality investigations as required
Projects & Continuous Improvement
- Participate in HAZOPs and support Operational Readiness, Commissioning, and Start-up activities
- Provide operational input during project initiation and development phases
- Review PSSR documentation at turnover on behalf of facility management (as assigned)
- Identify and recommend improvements to rail loading processes
- Contribute to procedure development and documentation of institutional knowledge
Qualifications
- Certified in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods preferred.
- 1+ year(s) related industry experience, either in a refinery or rail environment is preferred
- Familiar with the location and operation, shutdown, start-up and emergency procedures of all equipment related to rail car loading.
- Proficient in the use of PC’s and Microsoft Windows software, including Word and Excel.
- A certificate in 4th Class Power Engineering is considered an asset, or a desire to pursue the certification.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Work involves hands-on operation of equipment in an outdoor environment.
- Must be available for regular scheduled work hours and on-call emergency response.
