Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Operations Shift Supervisor plays a critical leadership role in the safe, efficient, and compliant day-to-day operation of the Moose Jaw Refinery.
This role is responsible for ensuring Gibson Energy standards, programs, and processes are followed while providing steady, credible leadership within a unionized operations environment. The successful candidate will be someone who can build trust on the floor, communicate clearly, and balance operational discipline with collaboration and respect.
The Operations Shift Supervisor provides hands-on leadership, mentoring, and coaching to operations staff and contractors while supporting Gibson Energy’s commitment to operational excellence, safety leadership, and continuous improvement.
About the Facility & Team
The Moose Jaw Refinery includes the Crude Unit, Utilities, Rail Car Loading, and Tank Farms/Logistics. Many members of the operations team bring decades of experience and take pride in the facility and its performance.
This role includes responsibility for staffing and scheduling a unionized workforce, addressing day-to-day operational issues in alignment with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), and coordinating closely with maintenance and logistics teams to ensure safe, reliable execution of work.
This is a role for a leader who understands the importance of labour relations, credibility, and communication, and who can confidently navigate both ground-level operational issues and broader leadership expectations with support from senior management and HR.
Leadership Opportunity

- An experienced operations or maintenance leader ready to step into a broader supervisory role, or
- A technically strong, emerging leader who is ready to be coached, developed, and supported in a formal leadership position.
Union experience and refinery exposure are highly valued, but we are also open to candidates from other oil & gas or energy operations where strong safety culture, operational discipline, and people leadership are essential.
What You’ll Be Doing
General
- Maintains continuous supervision of the plant/facility in accordance with regulatory requirements under the direction of the Operations Manager.
- Collaborates with the Operations Manager, Business Units, and Operations staff to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the Moose Jaw Facility while seeking opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Takes corrective action to ensure operational parameters remain within safe limits.
- Works with employees in a collaborative environment; proposes disciplinary action as required for employees who do not adhere to company policies, procedures, and practices.
- Holds operations personnel accountable for meeting all directives, assignments, and operational tasks associated with their positions.
- Supports the rollout and implementation of the Operations Management System (OMS).
- Acts as the lead during incident response, assuming the role of initial Incident Commander during emergency situations.
- Identifies, documents, and leads investigations as required.
- Identifies and documents operational risks within the facility and incorporates solutions into plant planning and operations.
- Demonstrates a personal commitment to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through active participation in all applicable programs and ensures safe operation of the Moose Jaw Refinery in compliance with all company policies and procedures.
- Assists with the integration and operationalization of projects, ensuring training and procedures are developed for new or modified processes.
- Performs regular audits of personal and process safety systems to ensure compliance.
- Assists with lifecycle management and regular review of site SSOPs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Maintenance
- Works closely with the Senior Maintenance Supervisor in planning and execution of routine work, scheduling, and turnarounds to support regulatory compliance and asset integrity.
- Acts as the primary operations contact for maintenance coordination, ensuring equipment is safely prepared and isolated following permit and energy isolation standards.
- Identifies opportunities to improve operations–maintenance coordination.
- Actively participates in the Management of Change (MOC) process.
Regulatory Compliance
- Works with the Operations Manager and Environmental & Regulatory Specialist to ensure all regulatory monitoring and reporting requirements are met.
- Ensures documented processes are in place for ground disturbance activities.
- Supports regulatory compliance activities and promotes Gibson’s strong safety culture through participation in EH&S meetings, reporting, and investigations.
Project Delivery
- Participates in project HAZOPs and provides operational input.
- Supports projects during initiation and development phases.
- Ensures operational readiness, training, and procedure development for new assets.
- Assumes operational responsibility for assets at turnover.
- Acts as the operations liaison on project teams and communicates project status to operations and facility leadership.
What You’ll Bring
- Minimum 3rd Class Power Engineering certification (preference for 2nd Class).
- Technologist Diploma, Power Engineering Certification, or valid trade ticket preferred.
- 5+ years of operations or maintenance experience supporting crude oil processing, terminals, pipelines, utilities, or steam generation preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- 2–3 years of leadership or supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized environment, with the ability to influence and build trust across diverse stakeholders.
- CMDS validator training experience considered an asset.
- Exposure to truck and rail transportation and TDG considered an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across functional teams.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, coupled with strong listening skills and emotional intelligence, enabling the development of trust, credibility, and respect.
Working Conditions
- Field-based position with minimal travel to other operating sites or Calgary head office.
- Rotating 7 days on / 7 days off schedule, including days and nights (12-hour shifts).
- Hands-on support of active operations and maintenance, including outdoor work as required.
- On-call availability for emergency response outside normal hours.
