The Laboratory Supervisor manages lab operations, including quality systems, development, and reporting, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. As a subject matter expert, they oversee product quality management in blending, optimization, and compliance. This role is accountable for the performance, development, and safety of the unionized lab staff, ensuring cost-effective results.
What You'll Be Doing
- Aligns with the Company values, responsible for developing and mentoring team members, and providing guidance and direction for the laboratory team, including:
- Managing performance of individuals to achieve results.
- Building a collaborative, innovative team to exceed customer expectations (internal and external).
- Communicating the Company’s vision and strategy in relatable terms.
- Creating an environment of engagement for team members to produce high quality services.
- Provides leadership in establishing, maintaining and monitoring of safety culture within the lab team.
- Develops and Maintains the Lab Competency Management Development System (CMDS).
- Oversees quality control processes, ensuring compliance with internal and external requirements, and liaises directly with customers and suppliers on product quality concerns.
- Manages Third-Party Laboratory sampling and testing.
- Maintains familiarization with current testing requirements and manufacturers recommended procedures regarding operation, calibration and maintenance of instruments.
- Identifies, designs and organizes laboratory studies and reviews reports for content and acceptability.
- Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing.
- Maintains a safe working environment in compliance with applicable standards and best lab practices.
- Communicates effectively and distributes lab performance indicators to internal groups as required.
- Develops and manages budgetary and resource plans with respect to lab assets and services.
- Leads the unionized laboratory team, providing guidance, development and performance management, scheduling and other supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Union CBA.
- Acts as a quality subject matter expert of the QM team to provide guidance on product quality related issues and initiatives to both internal and external customers.
- Provides input and expertise into expansion and development projects, relating to quality/sampling system design and implementation.
- Monitors and communicates changes to stream quality specifications and/or requirements to affected stakeholders to maintain stream quality compliance for the Refinery.
- Is responsible for ownership of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database, including configuration, reporting tools and system interfaces.
- Ensures TDG compliance with respect to Gibson product movements.
- Investigates and reports on internal and external quality infractions and contamination events.
- Plans, executes and reports on external and internal audit activities related to lab operations and product quality.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in industry technical groups.
- Maintains and develops working relationship with third party testing facilities and monitors process performance.
- Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Science (Chemistry) or a related field, or a Chemical Technology Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 5+ years of related work and supervisory experience.
- Valid Drivers License.
- Petroleum and/or Asphalt testing laboratory experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of ASTM testing standards for both Asphalt, Petroleum products.
- Working knowledge in quality management systems and processes relating to ISO 17025 or ISO 9001.
- Understanding of chemistry behind applicable lab processes as it relates to product quality.
- Knowledge in LIMS utilization, control charting functions, development and system interfaces.
- Analytical understanding of data output, repeatability, reproducibility and uncertainty statements.
- Knowledge of Asphalt and Petroleum quality specifications and industry guidelines.
- Knowledge of custody transfer processes and system design impacts on quality sampling and analysis.
- Ability to work and contribute in a team environment while independently managing multiple and competing priorities.
- Demonstrates proficiency with MS Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, One-Drive and Power BI.
- Exhibits excellent communication skills both verbally and written.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills and demonstrates flexibility; able to adapt to a changing environment.
- Demonstrates ability to liaise with all levels of the organization in various geographic locations.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with internal and external groups.
