The Role
Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, the Co-op Student will fulfill a lab technician role in routine analysis, and assist with research and development activities.

What You'll Be Doing 

  • Assists in conducting routine lab analysis on refinery products.
  • Assists in collecting samples as required in various sample container sizes from trucks, pipelines, tanks, process and QC buildings.
  • Orders lab supplies when necessary.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on lab equipment.
  • Performs administrative work including data review and entry into LIMS and applicable data reporting tools.
  • Maintains safe work procedures and a healthy lab environment according to Gibson Safety and Environmental policies.
  • Performs basic house keeping duties, which includes assisting in clearing old equipment from the lab.
  • Review and follow site-specific standard operating procedures. 
  • Reports all spills, emergencies and incidents & near misses to Lab Supervisor.
  • Informs Lab Supervisor of any lab issues affecting operations or stakeholders
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures. 
  • May perform other duties as assigned. 

 
Who We're Looking For

  • Currently enrolled or graduation in a chemistry related post secondary or technical program.
  • A degree or diploma from a technical institution in a related field would be an asset.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Possesses knowledge or experience in the petroleum industry would be an asset.
  • Knowledge in applicable lab operation technology including data management and instrument operation would be an asset.
  • Exhibits excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of chemistry.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in MS Outlook, Excel, and Word.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements 

  • This job is subject to background checks as outlined in Gibson Energy’s Background Checks policy. Background checks may include: pre-employment drug & alcohol testing, pre-employment functional fitness testing, reference checks, education and/or credentials verification, driver's license and driver's abstract verification and a criminal history check.
  • As this position includes operating a company vehicle, the successful candidate will be required to provide a minimum 3-year Driver's Abstract.
  • The majority of the work is performed in a lab environment.
  • This position requires physical mobility and able to perform duties in a confined space and/or in the vicinity of dangerous goods.
  • This position requires employees to wear appropriate PPE as required by the company’s safety policies and as required for weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces as well as climb ladders and stairs.
  • Standing and/or sitting for long periods.
  • Occasional bending and twisting is required as is prolonged neck positioning.
  • Some crouching, squatting, kneeling.
  • Frequent to constant upper extremity movements (elbows, forearm, wrist, handgrip).
  • Lifting up to 40lbs.
  • Pushing up to 30lbs and carrying up to 40lbs.
