The Role
The Rail Scheduler works closely within a team of schedulers, marketers and traders, to coordinate all rail activity at our Moose Jaw Refinery. The Scheduler collaborates with operations, internal, and external customers, and railway staff to deliver accurate and timely information for rail loading and offloading activities.
What You Will Do
- Coordinates the loading and unloading of railcars (including asphalt, distillates, and VGO) as per customer allocations.
- Acts as main daily contact for railways regarding movement of railcars into and out of the refinery.
- Instructs railway crews daily with switching instructions.
- Communicates daily railcar instructions and activities effectively with operations.
- Investigates, resolves, and communicates volumetric differences with internal and external counterparties.
- Maintains daily loading schedule database and supply and demand forecasts.
- Maintains record of inbound railcars for loading at refinery.
- Maintains bad order spreadsheet for rail car fleet.
- Prepares, executes, and manages invoices for all rail activity at the refinery.
- Negotiates spot rail rates and rail rate renewal packages with railways.
- Creates electronic shipping instructions for residue railcars, off lease cars, and bad order cars when required.
- Ensures all railcars are released with correct TDG information and proper shipping instructions.
- Collaborates with team members on the creation of procedures.
- Assists with the development and testing of applicable software and enhancements as required.
- Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring to the Role
- Post secondary Business Degree or Diploma is considered an asset.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in rail or truck scheduling industry or the equivalent education and years of experience.
- Strong Excel skills are required (pivot tables, complex formulas, graphs, charts, etc.).
- Effectively interact both orally and in writing with customers, functional area, and field personnel.
- Ability to build strong customer relationships by demonstrating solid customer service and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrates strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrates excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrates knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations.
- Knowledge of the Canadian Railway Industry would be considered an asset.
- Experience in software testing and implementation would be considered an asset.
- Related experience in rail car movements an asset.
- Related experience in transportation and terminal operations an asset.
- Demonstrates the ability to work conscientiously and efficiently with minimum supervision through self-motivation.
- Exhibits knowledge and the ability to analyze information and solve problems under pressure in order to meet deadlines.
