Summary
The Senior Manager Sustainability will play a significant role in leading the development and management of Gibson Energy’s sustainability and ESG strategy, reporting and performance. The Senior Manager Sustainability will also provide leadership and strategic input into the Indigenous Relations (IR) portfolio.  This role will work closely with senior leadership, operational teams, and external stakeholders to ensure that sustainability, ESG and IR considerations are embedded in our decision-making processes and corporate culture.

 

Accountabilities 

  • Aligns with the Company values and the Gibson Way, responsible for developing and mentoring team members, and providing guidance and direction for the overall group, including:
    • Manages performance of individuals to achieve results.
    • Builds a collaborative, innovative team to exceed customer expectations (internal and external).
    • Communicates the Company’s vision and strategy in relatable terms.
    • Creates an environment of engagement for team members to produce high quality services.  

 

Environmental Social Governance (ESG) 

  • Oversee Gibson’s ESG strategy and sustainability reporting through biannual Sustainability Reports, ensuring alignment with reporting frameworks including SASB, GRI and TCFD.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and leadership to collect data on Gibson’s annual sustainability and ESG performance metrics, gather content for Gibson’s sustainability reporting and respond to other external sustainability focused disclosure requests. 
  • Monitor external ESG initiatives such as best practices, industry trends, and emerging issues in the ESG space, peer reviews and incorporating this knowledge into ongoing strategy development and disclosure requirements.
  • Oversee disclosure of sustainability and ESG information in other corporate disclosures including Gibson’s Annual Information Form, Management Information Circular, and Investor Presentations.
  • Actively participate in the Board of Directors Sustainability Committee. This involves presenting on industry trends, the latest financial regulations (S1 and S2) progress on key initiatives and advising on ESG strategies.
  • In collaboration with the Communications, Government Relations and Stakeholder Relations team, this position is responsible to identify and oversee other internal and external communication material to engage various stakeholders on the Company’s sustainability strategy and performance.
  • Support with Gibson’s Investor Relations team to respond to investor focused sustainability requests in a timely manner and gain exposure to shareholders.
  • Oversee the compilation and review of data updates to external rating agencies including CDP, ISS, MSCI, S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment, Sustainalytics and Top 100 Employers.
  • Collaborate with the finance and risk team to conduct risk assessments and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Identify and oversee the implementation of opportunities to close gaps in Gibson’ ssustainability strategy, reporting and performance.
  • Support the development/update of Gibson’s ESG targets and annual ESG STIP targets and support their long-term achievement.

 

Indigenous Relations (IR)

  • Foster engagement practices and strategies that foster long-term relationships with Indigenous communities and Government officials at various levels in collaboration with the Communications, Government Relations and Stakeholder Relations team.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to the IR team as Gibson advances its IR programs in support of reconciliation efforts.
  • Advise senior leadership teams on strategic Indigenous engagement and provide consultation for projects.
  • Support and encourage the IR team in their involvement in community engagement, relationship building, and partnering opportunities with Indigenous communities based on Gibson’s areas of operations and project development plans. 
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders as well as external stakeholders to ensure strong and respectful interactions with Indigenous communities are developed.
  • Provide expert advice on matters of Indigenous and community relations.
  • Oversee the work to bring Indigenous worldviews and ways of thinking into Gibson Energy
  • Challenge current practices and seek to identify ways to build cultural sensitivity and increase capacity to engage with Indigenous peoples.
  • Advocate for the connection with national and local Indigenous leaders, Indigenous organizations, and advising bodies that Gibson participates in.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in environmental science, Sustainability, Business Administration, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 15+ years of experience in sustainability, ESG, IR or related roles within the oil and gas or energy sector.
  • Minimum 4+ years of work experience directly in Sustainability & ESG.
  • Recent experience working in leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of ESG & IR frameworks, standards, and reporting guidelines.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing sustainability strategies and initiatives.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions and influence senior leadership.
  • Strong analytical and project management skills.

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office programs with an emphasis on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent knowledge of sustainability and ESG best practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 

 

Knowledge Considered an Asset

  • Professional certifications in sustainability or ESG are an asset.


Working Conditions

  • Majority of the work is performed in an office environment. 
  • Occasional ad-hoc travel may be required to field locations.
