Summary
The SVP & Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for overseeing Gibson Energy’s North American infrastructure operations and ensuring business growth and operational efficiency across our terminal and processing assets in both Canada and the US. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, and often presenting to the Board of Directors, the COO will play a critical leadership role in executing the company's strategic objectives, driving operational discipline, and fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and innovation. The COO will lead a large team managing major capital projects, engineering, terminal and pipeline operations, marine terminal operations, environment, health and safety (EH&S) and supply chain functions.

 

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy Execution:

  •  Aligned with Company values, responsible for efficient business operations, building high performing teams who can deliver large-scale projects and ensure safe operations of all assets.
  • Drive strategic business initiatives and continuous improvement, aligning performance with corporate objectives.
  • A critical member of the Senior Management Team, contributing to company-wide strategic direction and priority setting.

 

Operational & Engineering Excellence:

  • Oversee operational efficiency and the development of best practices across all assets ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
  • Foster a culture of operational discipline through the Company’s Operations Management System (OMS), process safety and asset integrity programs.
  • Drive operational performance to exceed expectations in EH&S, quality, and customer service (internal and external).

 

Supply Chain Management:

  • Accountable for the supply chain department, ensuring seamless integration between procurement, inventory management, and logistics.
  • Optimize strategic sourcing initiatives and supply chain processes to support Gibson’s operations in both Canada and the US, with a focus on cost-effectiveness, reliability, and timely delivery of resources, to mitigate supply risks across operations and capital projects.

 

Capital Projects & Asset Management:

  • Lead the execution of large-scale capital programs (>500M), ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery while adhering to corporate governance and risk management protocols.
  • Accountable for the maintenance of asset integrity programs, engineering support, and project controls, ensuring efficient start-up and commissioning processes for new infrastructure.

 

EH&S Leadership:

  • Champion Gibson Energy’s EH&S mission while demonstrating personal commitment, ensuring all operations align with internal and external regulations and our corporate safety standards, while fostering a culture of safety and risk management.

 

Qualifications 
Education and Experience:

  • 15+ years of leadership experience in the energy industry with a focus on terminal operations, engineering, project management, EH&S, and supply chain oversight, particularly within crude oil processing, terminals, pipelines, and marine terminal operations.
  • Proven track record in overseeing large-scale capital programs, operational risk management, and multi-project programs.

Working Conditions

  • This is an office-based position in Calgary, Alberta, with regular travel required to Gibson Energy’s operational sites in Canada and the US.
