About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Assistant Controller leads consolidation, external financial reporting and corporate accounting activities. The role exercises delegated authority, develops the accounting and reporting team, and leads improvements to financial systems, accounting policies, controls and processes. The role works closely with business and corporate teams to assess significant transactions, resolve issues early and bring supported recommendations on matters requiring Controller approval.

What You'll Do

  • Act on behalf of the Corporate Controller for delegated accounting, close and reporting matters within authority limits.
  • Resolve routine issues independently, direct corrective action and escalate significant judgments with recommendations while maintaining effective backup coverage and continuity of delivery.
  • Own the quarterly and annual close and consolidated financial reporting process. Set priorities and review standards; substantively review financial statements, notes, cash flow, changes in equity, consolidation entries, intercompany eliminations, foreign-currency translation, reconciliations and monthly variance analysis prepared by the team. Direct resolution of unsupported balances or missing activity before Controller review.
  • Own delivery and substantive review of corporate accounting responsibilities, including equity, stock-based compensation and long-term debt entries, reconciliations and disclosures. Investigate missing or unsupported activity with Treasury and contributing teams. Coordinate accounting schedules for Tax's provisions and filings and review legal-entity financial statements and Canadian and U.S. statistical reporting within the role's responsibilities.
  • Establish consistent accounting positions and review standards across corporate accounting and reporting. Review and challenge IFRS research, memoranda and recommendations prepared by the team for acquisitions, joint arrangements, revenue, impairment, leases and provisions; approve conclusions within delegated authority and escalate significant judgments to the Corporate Controller with a recommended approach. Approve conclusions and significant communications within delegated authority, escalate material matters, and ensure consistency across financial statements, public filings and shareholder communications.
  • Own the Finance relationship with the external auditors for quarterly reviews and the year-end audit. Set expectations for deliverables, approve responses involving judgment, resolve significant comments and direct corrective actions. Oversee the team's coordination of requests, preparation of support and resolution of routine review matters.
  • Engage with business owners on significant agreements and new ventures before period-end. Establish accounting inputs, reporting responsibilities and process changes and escalate significant judgments with a recommended approach.
  • Lead accounting input to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Workiva changes affecting corporate accounting and reporting.
  • Approve accounting requirements, mappings, reporting logic, workflow designs and acceptance recommendations developed by the team. Work with IT, Shared Services and Internal Controls on relevant reviews, ensure testing is sufficient, and output reconciliations remain effective.
  • Own the function’s improvement priorities and outcomes. Select and sequence initiatives, define expected benefits, assign resources, remove barriers and approve implementation. Direct simplification and automation of recurring work, with the Senior Accountant leading hands-on analysis, design, testing, implementation and documentation of assigned initiatives. Validate results, maintain documented controls and audit trails, and demonstrate improvements in reliability, timeliness or effort.
  • Set priorities and review responsibilities, manage workloads and deadlines, and provide regular feedback, coaching and development plans. Build independent judgment through clear expectations, practical guidance, cross-training and documented procedures.

Who You Are

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience post-qualification, preferably in the energy services industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate contracts and transactions, research complex IFRS matters, exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations and reach clear, defensible accounting conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ownership of close and reporting cycles, including setting priorities, coordinating contributors, substantively reviewing financial statements, MD&A and audit deliverables, and resolving issues within delegated authority.
  • Ability to identify what matters, determine the appropriate depth of analysis, challenge assumptions constructively and translate complex matters into concise conclusions, decision points and recommendations for senior leaders and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop accounting professionals, delegate effectively, provide high-quality review and coaching, and build independent judgment and accountability within a team.
  • Strong Excel and financial-systems capability, including investigating general-ledger data, assessing reporting logic, reconciling outputs and using available tools to identify root causes and improve the quality or efficiency of work.
