PRIMARY PURPOSE OF JOB:
Lead a petroleum testing lab and its technical staff in daily operations; including maintenance and calibration of lab instruments, data management and reporting, employee management and quality oversight. Maintaining efficient, continuous lab operation, in conjunction with adherence to Gibson’s EH&S management systems. This position will ensure that all tests be performed according to applicable company SOP’s and ASTM standards, while conforming to quality management policies, procedures and objectives.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
· Perform daily product and sample testing as required
· Maintain and calibrate lab instruments in conjunction with our Maximo program as required.
· Oversee quality control processes and ensure data compliance
· Collect and transport samples as required
· Manage customer sampling and testing requests/programs
· Oversee applicable Maximo work requests and ensure completion by target deadlines
· Witness sample collection and analysis at our suppliers and customers facilities
· Develop maintain and modify safe work procedures and a healthy lab environment according to Gibson Environmental, Health and Safety policies.
· Ensure that all lab instrumentation and equipment conforms to safety requirements and is operated in a safe manner according to the manufacturer’s instructions
· Ensure that lab processes conform to company directives relating to regulatory requirements
· Maintain familiarization with current testing requirements and manufacturers recommended procedures regarding operation, calibration and maintenance of instruments.
· Order lab supplies as required.
· Provide information and interpretation of analysis to external and internal customers.
· Recommend replacement and new equipment when necessary.
· Participate in external and internal audits of lab processes.
· Investigate emerging technologies and equipment as applicable
· Keep up to date with changing test methods and industry quality requirements
· Design, organize and participate in laboratory experiment projects
· Develop and maintain third party testing processes
· Complete LIMS enhancements and configuration
· Conduct operation and safety meetings as required
· Assist with laboratory budget planning and implementation
· Develop training/informational material
· Assist with the development, implementation and operation of a quality management system
· Plan, Develop and Implement processes relating to quality management and ISO principles
· Effectively communicate and distribute lab related information to the operations group as required
· Mentor, train, and evaluate personnel as required
· Conduct performance evaluations for lab technician staff
· Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training new employees
· Oversee the shift schedule with consideration of fatigue management
· Staff lab shifts as required
· Perform basic house keeping duties.
· Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S).
· Understands and abides by all EH&S policies and procedures and assumes responsibility for the safe operation of your branch, team, or unit.
· Leads and participates in all company safety programs and ensures team members are compliant with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
· May perform other duties as assigned


KEY SKILLS:
· Familiarity with MS Outlook, Excel, Word, Power BI
· Knowledge in LIMS utilization, control charting functions and development
· Gas Chromatograph knowledge
· Understanding of the chemistry behind applicable lab processes
· Analytical understanding of data output, repeatability, reproducibility and uncertainty statements
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

QUALIFICATIONS:
· Chemical Technology Diploma - NAIT or equivalent
· 5+ years petroleum testing lab experience
· A degree or diploma from a technical institution in a related field would be an asset
· Valid Driver’s License
· Knowledge in quality management practices relating to ISO 17025 or ISO 9001


WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Most of work is completed in an office but could also involve sampling within the terminal. Due to daily condition changes, employee may be exposed to different weather elements
· This position requires physical mobility and able to perform duties in the vicinity of dangerous goods
